History

In December 2021 the derelict church of St Simon’s Mt Gould (Edith Avenue, PL4 8TJ) legally became part of St Matts. The PCC (Parochial Church Council) agreed with the Diocese of Exeter to an 18 month period to assess the longer term viability of developing a new worshipping community at the church in partnership with St Matts, restoring the buildings and serving the area. Since then there there have been some key developments including much work to the building and grounds by a small but dedicated group of volunteers, a midweek service with a regular attendance for around 25, monthly Sunday afternoon hangout for all ages, a monthly prayer and praise small group and many one-of events such as concerts, BBQ’s, coronation picnic etc. St Simons church was built in 1907 and has had a big impact on the local community over the last century. In the summer of 2023 St Matts PCC agreed to officially move forward with the church plant at St Simons and we are excited to see how God will use the next iteration of the St Simons community!
